I'm starting to
see them pop up more and more.
"300,000 Leads
for $300.00"
"700,000 Leads
for $500.00"
Sounds like a great
deal, doesn't it? Honestly speaking, I
don't know how good the leads actually are because I don't
buy leads. I've heard they're pretty good. I've heard
they're unresponsive.
Either way, there's
a growing trend of these discounted
leads suppliers - and an ever growing customer base to buy
them.
As an installer,
though, I can tell you this much. The
majority of the people who DO buy them don't always realize
what goes in to setting up a list that size to market to.
No idea at all.
They're just looking for the "Instant
Optin List". They have visions of instant riches of
mailing to a list that size.
Can't say as I blame
them. It's what all the Guru's say:
"The money is in your list". OK - so let's buy a list!
So now here comes
the real problem. Joe ListBuyer pays his
money and downloads an incredibly large file which contains
all of "their" new subscibers.
And then they (some
of them anyway) get in touch with me.
"Hey Mike,"
they say. "I can't seem to upload my new list I
just bought. What do I do?"
"Well, how
is the list formatted?" I ask.
"Huh?"
Long story short
{FIRSTNAME Friend}, I spend time
explaining how to format the list, which most still come
back to me and pay me do it anyway. Hey - nothing on them.
It IS a pain!
Well, next comes
the importing. They import their 300,000
subscribers, then excitedly put together their first email,
filled with awesome deals. They format their mailings,
then click the ole "send" button.
That's where the
fun begins.
Here's the part
where a little education comes in real
handy. And believe me, I had to learn this the hard way too!
Most of your brand
new marketers on line today buy web
space from a webhost - usually space that is on a shared
server. A shared server that may be "sharing" with several
HUNDRED other websites.
And most of these
web hosts have strict limitations about
how large a list you can run (provided they even allow it
these days). Let me tell you - the limits aren't even CLOSE
to 300,000! The most I have seen allowed is around 25,000.
But most will tell you when you get up around 10,000 find
dedicated hosting or use an email service.
Even with dedicated
servers, depending upon the hardware
and software being run, 300,000 could be pushing it.
I did a test on
a dedicated server with a list of 1.8
million. They uploaded fine. But when we test mailed the
list, it so bogged down the server that even after a week,
only about 25,000 emails went out. The server was not
configured to handle it.
After speaking to
a few "server guru's", general rule of
thumb: Shared hosting - max 25,000. Dedicated server (not
configured for that kind of emailing) - max 250,000.
So {FIRSTNAME Friend},
if you have plans to buy into one of
these lead packages, do a little research and see if you're
ready for it.
$300.00 may be cheap
for a list that size, but it could
cost you MUCH more in the long run. Make sure you're in a
hosting environment that can handle it. Make sure you
either know how to format your leads, or you know someone
who can.
And if you're in
a shared environment and try to email to
300,000 people, be prepared for spam complaints, having
your host suspend your site, or have them delete your list
because it's bogging down the server.
You can't make money
THAT way!
